The Queenstown Art Society is throwing open the doors of the Queenstown Arts Centre on Saturday, August 18, for a winter open day.

The day will feature 11 artists from New Zealand, Australia, England, Scotland and South Korea at work in their studios on a variety of traditional and contemporary artworks, from landscape, abstract and portrait paintings to textiles, quilting, pottery and feathers.

The Queenstown-based artists involved are Martin Bell, Emma Butler, Karyn Hitchman, Andi King, Hamish McBride, Rosalind Moseby, Sunhee Shin, Kristopher Thomas, Sue Wademan, Dominic Wilson and Kathryn Pender.

Children will be encouraged to use the materials and paper available on the day and create their own work of art on the theme of Milford Sound from 2pm.

International artist Spike Wademan will judge at 5pm and present the prize of a trip for the winning child and one adult to Milford Sound, courtesy of Milford Sound Select.

Miss Pender said the open day was intended to create a buzz around the centre and reveal to the community the activities which went on in it.

The open day runs in the centre, on the corner of Stanley and Ballarat Sts, from noon to 7pm.
