Queenstown Primary School Media Group pupils (from left) Josh Perry (13), Mia Bisley (13), Hannah Coombe (13), Martin Schnelle (12), Seth Mawhinney (11) and Mika Turnbull (13), plus absentees Chester Rosie (13) and Christopher Hansen (11), have earned the school almost $3000 in competition winnings in only their first year of study.

Formed by teacher Nick Brown, the specialist group won $1700 as first runner-up in the video category of the 2013 Safekids Creative Quest, sponsored by Starship Foundation.

Their three-and-a-half-minute drama plays with time and reality to show the difference wearing a cycle helmet makes.

The group won one of two highly commended awards out of 78 entries for the inaugural 2013 BNZ Smart Money Digital Story Competition for their short film Money, Money.

The group also won $1000 of camera equipment from the success of its storyboard in a Panavision competition and is about to enter its short film for the next round.

Mr Brown said the winnings would be invested in upgrading cameras, a more professional edit suite and new lights for outside filming.

The teacher and the group thanked the school's parent-teacher association for providing $1000 for media gear earlier this year.
