The number of "sustainable" wine entries from Otago in this year's Air New Zealand Wine Awards is nearly double last year's figure.
New Zealand Winegrowers global marketing director Chris Yorke said 205 entries had been received from Otago winemakers.
Of the total entries, 32.7% are sustainable wines. Last year, 17.5% of entries from Otago were considered sustainable.
To be considered sustainable, all grapes used in a wine are certified through an independently audited sustainability programme.
Winemaking and packaging facilities used in the production of each wine are judged through the same programme.
Total entries for this year's most prestigious national wine competition stand at 1586, with almost 40% of entries being sustainable wines.
Mr Yorke said a goal within the industry was to achieve 100% sustainability by 2012.
Marlborough has the most entries overall (610), followed by Hawkes Bay (327) and Otago (205).
