Queenstown is the natural place for a Tauranga artist to make her South Island exhibition debut, Susan Harrison-Tustain says.

A dozen originals with connections to Otago, Fiordland and Southland by professional artist and author Harrison-Tustain go on public display in Mountfort Gallery today.

The watercolour and oil painter will be in the gallery on Earl St from today until Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.

"I believe it is important to give back to the arts in New Zealand and so, while in Queenstown, I am going to have a free mini workshop for artists on Sunday, 4pm to 5.30pm," she said.

"I will share some of the painting breakthroughs, hints and tips that have helped me on my painting journey. I want to inspire artists to reach for the stars.

"There will be the opportunity to make a gold coin donation to my favourite charity - Sir Ray Avery's Medicine Mondiale, which helps millions of underprivileged people all over the world.

"Sir Ray honoured me by officially opening my previous exhibition. He gave his valuable time without charge - it was very humbling."

Southern Recollections opens today at noon and the show runs until the end of the month.
