A skydiver fell to his death near the Wanaka Airport about 4pm today.
The 38-year-old man, who was an Italian national, died while filming a paid tandem skydive.
It appeared the skydiver had difficulties with both his main and reserve parachutes, and died when he hit the ground, police said.
Several people who witnessed the incident have been offered support and counselling.
The Civil Aviation Authority has been notified and will be investigating.
