Out of hundreds of nominees, who were recognised for their outstanding achievements and their inspirational influence, 49 semifinalists were announced in December.
The judging panel, headed by awards patron and former prime minister Jim Bolger, yesterday announced their shortlist of 15 candidates.
The 15 finalists cover five categories: New Zealander of the Year, Young New Zealander, Senior New Zealander, Community of the Year and Local Heroes.
Sir Eion's category celebrates "ongoing achievement" for nominees who have made a major difference to New Zealand.
Olympic gold medallist Valerie Vili, founder of The Warehouse Stephen Tindall and scientist and inventor Ray Avery were announced as finalists for the top category.
The winners will be announced on February 3.
