Short-film deadline extended

Aspiring film-makers have extra time to enter the short-film competition of the Winter Games Adventure Film Festival, with the deadline extended to August 12.

Festival manager Malcolm Blakey said this week the additional 11 days were arranged to encourage as many entries as possible. At least 10 had been submitted so far, based on the theme "the spirit of adventure", and more were expected, he said.

"All are very good quality. Once we get them all in, we'll have five finalists for the last night, with audience participation deciding the winner."

Entry forms are available from NZone Skydive and the Winter Games NZ office, Earl St. Prizes include a skydive, courtesy of the sponsor, Oakley goggles, tickets to see the Black Seeds perform, as part of Winter Games, in the Lake Wanaka Centre, on August 28, plus a cash prize to be determined.

Mr Blakey said a coup for the festival programme was the inclusion of the Best of Kendal, to be screened on the same night.

The "best-of" consists of six films from the world-renowned Kendal Mountain Festival, including The Swiss Machine (2011), a profile of speed mountaineer Ueli Steck, and First Ascent: Point of No Return (2010), the attempt to climb the east side of Mt Edgar, China.

Multi-award winning New Zealand documentary Last Paradise (2010) featuring adventurers AJ Hackett, Allan Byrne, Ton Deken, Kristin Boese, Sky Solbach, Dave Smithers and Jeff Campbell, opens the festival.

• The Winter Games Adventure Film Festival, Queenstown Memorial Hall, Friday, August 19 to Sunday, August 21. Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for children and are available from i-Site Visitor Centre Queenstown, TicketDirect and the Winter Games NZ office in the hall.
