School trust achieves $100,000 goal

A house-building project by supporters of the Hawea Flat Primary School has returned a $101,330 windfall for the directors of a fundraising trust.

The Hawea Flat School Fundraising Trust completed its Timsfield Homefront Project in February when a three-bedroom house, largely built by volunteers, sold for $310,500.

Trust chairwoman Lindsey Schofield said trustees were pleased at the final profit made on the "ambitious" fundraiser.

"We were aiming to make $100,000, as to take on a project of this size and scale we had to make some big numbers to make it worth everyone's while,"Being able to achieve their fundraising goal was particularly pleasing given the state of the property market, Ms Schofield said.

Trustees were nervous about being able to close a sale of the house, because there was "so few houses selling in the area," she said.

"We set our reserve with our overall profit in mind so we are delighted that we sold it. This will be a real boost to the school and we intend to make this money work very hard," Ms Schofield said.

A key factor of the project was keeping building costs to a minimum, which was achieved by careful management of the project by Peter Teal and the generous support of sponsors, tradesmen and volunteers, she said.

"We managed to keep the costs to a fraction of a normal build cost, and that is how we have achieved our goal."

The trust intends to use the money to help fund activities and resources at the burgeoning Hawea Flat rural school. The roll is about 165 pupils and increasing.
