The first downhill round of the 2012 NZ Mountain Bike Cup took place in scorching weather on a brand-new course starting from the Remarkables Ski Area access road last week.

In dry, dusty conditions, hundreds of spectators watched more than 150 competitors career some 375m down the fast, open track on the Remarkables face. Harriet Latchem was the best of the Queenstown competitors, taking second place in the women's elite race. Joe Dodgshun joined the crowds.
