Two Queenstowners have established a ladies’ disc golf league to encourage more women to give the sport a go.

Jessie Reynolds and Alexa Macdonald are behind the new league, which meets every Thursday at the Queenstown Gardens course, which is primarily focused on newbies.

Reynolds says women can often be intimidated by guys playing, "because they can throw a lot further".

"So this is sort of a group set up to attract people who want to have a go ... we can lend you a disc, teach you the ropes and everything."

Macdonald: "It’s all about being brave enough to try something new."

While there are some more competitive members in the group, the Thursday league’s more about getting out for the fun of it.

"It’s pretty casual because we’re just trying to really attract more women to the sport — maybe not in the competitive sense, but just trying to get everybody together."

"We just want to make it less intimidating, rather than coming out and being like, ‘I have no idea what I’m doing, there are loads of people watching’, sort of thing."

On average about 10 women turn up each Thursday, but Macdonald and Reynolds are hoping to grow the league, noting everyone who gives it a crack says it’s more fun than they’d imagined, and note it’s a nice way to wrap up the day, especially in summer.

"It’s just good vibes ... you don’t have to worry about doing super-well, because that’s not the point. It’s a good chance to get out, try something new and meet people," Reynolds says.
