Arrowtown's first buyers’ agent says there’s keen interest from expat Kiwis in buying properties in the Queenstown-Lakes region they can live in when they decide to return home.

Jo Eddington, who started Buying Queenstown.com just over six months ago, says she saw the need for an advocate who works solely for buyers, helping them navigate the market with expert advice and providing access, often, to off-market opportunities.

"It’s been a huge hit, particularly with expats and high-net-worth individuals who already understand the value of having a dedicated buyers’ agent, which is almost the norm overseas.

"There are so many expats and high-net-worth buyers looking for the perfect home, and Queenstown ticks all the boxes."

Eddington says she takes on just six clients at a time to give herself time to find something for them at their price point, be it in the low millions or $15million-plus.

"Just because an agent says it’s going to be a $3m house, I want to look and see whether I think it’s worth $3m for the buyer, because they’re paying me not to overspend."

She says she collaborates with top agents and agencies in the region who often give her buyers access to pre-market opportunities.

"Many vendors reach out to me directly, unsure if they want to go through the full marketing process, and I match them with buyers who are ready to act."

Eddington notes with whispers the government will ease restrictions for foreign buyers sometime next year, expats are acting quickly to secure their dream home.

"That’s seeded the thought in some people’s minds that if they don’t get in now, they’re going to be faced with competition from other nationalities."

Eddington, who this week took on a research assistant, plans going a roadshow to global hubs next May.

"I’ve got Queenstown advisers, including the top Overseas Investment Office legal expert, coming with me for parts of it."
