Preschool is hoping to expand

Pending resource consent, the Queenstown Montessori Preschool has plans to expand.

Owner of the Robins Rd preschool Guy Hughes wants to expand into the adjacent property, which he also owns and which until recently housed the Queenstown campus of Language School New Zealand.

The language school moved into O'Connells Shopping Arcade in the town centre just before Christmas, and the freed-up space is proposed to be developed to cater for an extra 20 children, in addition to the current consent maximum of 38 children.

The preschool opened in February last year and was expanded in October, and both stages of development were quickly filled.

Mr Hughes said they were looking to push for stage 3, which would be a "centre of innovation which will really enhance what is on offer for early childhood education in Wakatipu".

"We are looking to have kids of a much younger age, certainly from the toddler walking stage, and it will be one organisation over two buildings ... The concepts are very much around that pre-Montessori stage in preparation for Montessori age," he said.

The changes would include redevelopment of the ground floor of the two-storey language school building, expanding the outdoor play area and new fencing around the site.

Acoustic Engineering Services were employed to measure what effect there would be from noise increase. They found the increase would be "less than minor".

In the application, continued consent for operation of the language school for up to 50 adult students was sought at the Robins Rd premises because the lease was limited to three years.
