Preparing for Waitangi Day

Preparations for Queenstown's inaugural Waitangi Day in the Park are well under way, with a line-up of music, cultural activities and even a hangi stall in the offing.

The resort will play host to a public Waitangi Day celebration after the Queenstown Lakes District Council secured a $2000 grant from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

Council arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell said there was some "great entertainment" being organised, in conjunction with the Wakatipu Whanau Group's Leah Webster, who had been involved with the now-defunct Reggae in the Park events.

The event would include activities such as flax weaving, Maori language and storytelling, musical performances, a hangi and a sausage sizzle.

It would be Queenstown's first public celebration of the holiday - at least since Mrs Maxwell had been with the council - and it would be a free, "family-oriented" event.

It was planned festivities would start in the Queenstown Gardens at noon and finish at 7pm.
