Pass price riles local skier

Queenstown woman unhappy with NZSki's season-pass price hikes, which she called "extortionate", has launched a petition seeking "reasonable and affordable" prices for locals.

Vicki Zadrozny hoped to get at least 1000 signatures on the petition, which she is circulating around businesses in town.

"So many people I've already spoken to are not buying a pass this season because it's simply just so unaffordable.

Many of them have been opening up their pockets for years to buy passes for their local mountains and have just had enough this time round."

At $889, Coronet Peak and the Remarkables' locals passes increased $90 this season, on top of last year's $100 price hike.

She said NZSki should rethink how it justified the price increase to locals, the people "working in frontline all around town ... the ones selling their passes to tourists, and advising and recommending which they think is a better mountain to ski."

NZSki chief executive James Coddington said he looked forward to sitting down with Ms Zadrozny and explaining the reasons for the price increase.

"We are a business and we incur significant price increases each year, and I'll be very happy to sit down with Vicki and explain and point out exactly all of those areas."

Ms Zadrozny thought NZSki would already be feeling "a dent" in season-pass sales this year, and she was aware some people were looking to ski at Cardrona instead.

Mr Coddington would not say how many season passes had been sold so far.
