Salmonella Sound System has 20 years of pioneering tunes to play when it holds its Same Home Town vinyl launch party in Queenstown on Sunday.
Salmonella Sound System - the leaner, more flexible and dance floor-ready touring version of the full 10-strong New Zealand band Salmonella Dub - features co-founder Andrew Penman mixing on stage accompanied by a three-part horn section, percussion and a master of ceremonies on the microphone.
The band released new single Same Home Town on 12-inch vinyl and digitally on Friday, ahead of its eighth studio album next year, Penman said.
''We started 20 years ago with community hall shows around the South Island and have fond memories of many small hall and club shows in Queenstown,'' he said from his home Nelson.
''The last time was in the memorial hall and usually an after-party in Subculture, so it's been quite a few years.''
The band was approached by Base Backpackers, which wanted an act for Labour Weekend. The dates fitted with the group's touring schedule ''and being the staunch Mainlanders that we are, any opportunity to play around the South Island is jumped on'', Penman said.
Penman describes their sound as ''an eclectic mix of dance music, from downbeat dub to drum'n'bass with four-on-the-floor steppy, housey kind of club mixes in between - and I've seen descriptions of us as a kind of Pacific medley of styles''.
''This line-up enables us to represent our full catalogue much more dance-orientated than perhaps the live band.''
• Salmonella Sound System and the Queenstown Times have two pairs of tickets to give away to the gig at Base Backpackers on October 27.
