More than 60 pupils from Queenstown Primary School are expected to compete at the Otago Central Primary School Athletic championships next Wednesday.

The school held an athletics day yesterday for pupils aged 7 to 10.

Event organiser Paula Nicolls said the day was "really positive".

"We had about 50 pupils go through to the Otago championships last year and this year we should have close to 70," she said.

Overall results from the day are still being finalised.

Pupils have the opportunity each year to try out for the championships.

The all-day event covered the school field and the Queenstown recreational ground and took in high jump, hurdles, sprints, relay races, long-distance races and discus.
