Kyle Rutherford competed over Labour Weekend at the North Island BMX championships near Pukekohe. Kyle went three places better this year to fifth in the 16 boys.
Shaun Simpson placed third in the New Zealand secondary schools smallbore rifle shooting competition.
Cameron Porteous, Reuben Wairau (both under-15 boys), Talei Pelasio (under-13 girls), Jemma Gilbert and Rebekah Wairau (under-17 girls) have been selected for Otago touch teams.
On October 25, KVC hosted the Otago v Southland table tennis tournament.
Eight Kaikorai Valley pupils - Mariza Antonopolou, Sarah Ramsay, Emma Dingley-Crawford, Shammah Ncube, Jasmine Ngatae, Courtney Power, Hamish King and Jeremy Meldrum-Harris - represented Otago.
During junior tournament week, KVC entered a number of teams in the various events. Girls handball was a new sport for the school.
The cricketers combined with Kavanagh College and won the twenty20 boys competition.
The KVC girls tennis team placed third overall.
Three volleyball teams took part in the competition on Wednesday and two touch teams were entered for the tournament on Thursday, where the mixed team won its grade.
John McGlashan College
Year 11 pupil Rory Ferguson dominated the sporting awards at senior prizegiving.
As captain and MVP of the New Zealand under-16 rugby league team, he won the highest sporting performance award and also picked up the best all-rounder trophy.
The team of the year was the under-16 double scull pair of Woody Kirkwood and Tom Grave.
Nine records tumbled at the swimming sports. Courtland Ellis was awarded the champion of champions prize when he won all five of his junior events in record time.
Ben Simmers and Han Zhang broke two records each in the senior competition, Ben winning the senior championship. Bryn Schievink won the junior diving contest and Hamish Cotter picked up the senior award.
Fencer Louis Jennings received a special award as the youngest competitor in 71 years at the New Zealand men's open championships to reach the last eight in the competition. He is ranked No1 in the under-15 foil and epee, and seventh in open men's foil.
Andrew Goh has been selected in the Otago under-15 badminton team.
Ethan Jane and Peter Sangster have made the Otago under-17 volleyball team.
King's High School
At the recent Otago volleyball championships, King's beat Mount Aspiring, Otago Boys' and John McGlashan, before losing in two close sets to Bayfield in the final.
This now qualifies the team to compete in the South Island championships in Invercargill next weekend.
Year 9 pupil Rhett Wilson has just returned from an ice hockey tournament in Adelaide, where he helped the Southern Knights under-14 team win gold, while Jack Laney has been asked to attend a New Zealand under-18 indoor bowls coaching clinic.
King's entered a year 9 team and a year 10 team in the Otago junior secondary schools touch tournament.
The year 10 team quickly established its total dominance, scoring an unbelievable 50 touchdowns in five games and conceding only one.
The year 9 team also did well by beating all schools except the King's year 10 team.
The King's year 9A cricket team progressed to the final of the NZCT year 9 knockout cup with a convincing win over Dunstan in the semifinal.
The team will travel to Invercargill soon to play Southland Boys' to earn the right to represent the Otago-Southland zone in the finals in Palmerston North.
Otago Girls' High School
Kiana Pelasio has been selected for the New Zealand under-19 women's touch team and Becky Paterson was selected for the Otago under-15 touch team.
Beth Garey was second in the women's sabre event at the New Zealand fencing championships, while Abbey Smith was third in the duet for age group 13/14/15 years at the national synchronised swimming championships in Wellington.
Karley Wilden Palms was first in the senior girls singles at the Otago secondary schools rowing regatta.
Karley and Juliette Lequeux were also first in the senior girls doubles at the same event.
The senior A team remains the Futsal South division one champion after beating Logan Park High School 7-2 in the final.
Across its 14 games in both term one and term four, it was unbeaten, scoring 160 goals and conceding just 13.
The 9A, 9B and 10A volleyball teams are participating in the South Island secondary schools junior championships in Invercargill.
In junior tournament week, OGHS had teams competing in tennis, water polo, volleyball and touch.
East Otago High School
At junior tournament week, the mixed softball team had a win and two close losses to finish third.
The girls handball team, which was made up of three juniors and five year 8 girls, had two wins and two losses to place fifth.
In volleyball, the girls team had a win, two losses and a draw to finish ninth in A grade, while the boys had two wins and two losses to finish second in A grade.
At the touch tournament on the final day, the boys managed fifth place in A grade and the girls third place in B grade.
The school's sporting achievement awards will be announced at the prizegiving.
Nominees for sportsperson of the year are Samuel Church (transtasman rodeo competition), Olivia Ollerenshaw (South Island senior girls duathlon champion), James Bungard (South Island intermediate boys team duathlon champion and senior boys school swimming, athletics and cross-country champion), Jasmine Neilson (under-17 representative netball and talent ID selection), Cameron Bartrum (leading school team to national curling title and South Island intermediate boys team duathlon champion) and Andrew Grubb (North Otago cricket).
Logan Park High School
Logan Park pupils competed in junior tournament week, winning the dodgeball and finishing third in water polo and handball.
Tash Gosling (year 12) has qualified for the New Zealand secondary schools athletics championships in shot put, while Hamish McKinley, Bradley Yates and Jonty Horwell have all been selected for the national secondary schools bowls tournament in Auckland.
The school is very happy with its sports participation rate, which has increased to 62%. Basketball remains the most popular sport with hockey, football and futsal close behind.
Senior prizegivings and blues awards celebrated outstanding successes and New Zealand titles in basketball, fencing, gymnastics, bowls, taekwondo and luge as well as South Island and regional representative status.
Shannon Thorsnes won the premier blue for her outstanding performance in Australasian gymnastics competitions.
At senior prizegiving, Runa Falanitule (girls) and Tyler Stenton-Martin (boys) won the service to sport awards.
The Logan Park junior prizegiving is next week. Solomon Liesbeth, Lily Menzies, Ben Major, Aria Nader-Turner, Molly Morley and Jacob Duffy are already standing out, winning multiple awards across diverse areas including athletics, cross-country, football, futsal, volleyball, basketball and hockey.
Jacob Duffy is attending an elite under-18 hockey academy.
The junior sports council is reviewing and planning for next year, with a handball competition already scheduled and coaching courses with Sport Otago.
Taieri College
The Taieri College blues function was held recently and Bradley Tarleton and Tia Wylie claimed the major titles, Bradley for his record-breaking hammer throwing and Tia for her record of 129 games for the senior A team and dedication to swimming, multisport and volleyball.
The junior A netball team was named team of the year after its winning performances at Otago and South Island tournaments.
Taieri has fielded two boys cricket teams due to the growth of cricket at the school.
This has led to an investment in additional training equipment such as bowling machines to help develop the talented players.
The First XI is at present unbeaten in the premier schools grade, and the Second XI has made a solid start in the junior A competition.
Taieri College progressed to the second round of the NZCT Cup, where it competed well before losing to Otago Boys'.
Rory Findlay was a standout, taking three wickets, while Regan Miller and Shaun Kenworthy each had two.
Hayden Walker put in a solid batting performance, scoring 68. Rory has been asked to join the Otago under-15 team.
The following pupils were selected for Otago touch teams: Cameron Dyer, Celine Timoko (both under-17), Lewis Dyer, Bailey Ferguson, Shanae Burgess (under-15), Trey Russell, Flynn Murdoch, Finn McDonald-Page and Thomas Mitchell (under-13).
The school had many teams competing at junior tournament week.
The cricket team lost by seven runs in a close final against Kavanagh College, the girls touch team won the B final at the Oval, and the boys were third in the A final.
St Hilda's Collegiate
A double blue has been introduced to St Hilda's this year.
Recipients need to have been a member of a team that has won a national title, or as an individual had a top-three placing at a national championship event or been selected in a national team.
This year, 17 St Hilda's girls were recognised with this honour.
The sports council has also introduced an honours board for age-group representatives.
These girls have had to represent New Zealand in a national age group or team, or competed as an individual representing New Zealand at an international event.
The following girls met this criteria: Laney Keenan and Whitney Keenan (New Zealand under-18 ice hockey), Abbey Johnston and Paige Thomson (New Zealand under-15 mixed touch), Sophie Coutts (New Zealand rhythmic gymnastics), Nicole Ruske (New Zealand under-16 women's basketball), Caitlyn George (New Zealand athletics), Aleisha Ruske (New Zealand under-18 basketball), Zara Anthony-Whigham (New Zealand ice figure skating) and Libby van Harselaar (New Zealand under-15 water polo).
Polly Inglis is in the Junior Black Sticks team that plays games in Australia next month, and Polly and Bella James have been selected in the Otago Sparks cricket team.
Libby van Harselaar and Olivia O'Neill have been selected to attend the New Zealand under-16 basketball trials.
St Hilda's teams are travelling to the national secondary schools touch championships in Papakura, the cricket team is competing at the NZCT tournament in Palmerston North, and 11 athletes are competing at the New Zealand secondary schools athletics championships in Wanganui next month.
Dunstan High School
Dunstan has three cricket teams competing in the local competition.
The First XI started with a win followed by two losses.
The junior boys have been going well and will be heading to Dunedin to compete in the next round of the NZCT competition.
The softball teams have also been competing in local competitions and in addition there were three junior teams in the Otago secondary schools tournament.
The athletics team continues to build for the national championships.
With the event fast approaching, there has been a clear increase in training intensity and time trials are now being run to gauge progress.
Dunstan rowing crews have been out on the water training and competing in local regattas.
Their results so far have been promising and the squad should be in a strong position for the South Island secondary schools regatta and Maadi Cup early next year.
