Injured woman airlifted

A German woman was airlifted to Lakes District Hospital from Ben Lomond yesterday afternoon after she broke her ankle while hiking, St John said.

St John Queenstown team manager Alana Reid said the 41-year-old tourist had the accident at about 1pm and was flown to hospital by the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust helicopter.

It is understood she was hiking with six or seven people north of the Ben Lomond Saddle on the Moonlight Track when the accident happened.

Constable Mark Pettigrew, of Queenstown, said a passing tramper alerted police with his mobile phone.
