Former Ministry bar to get American-style makeover

The bar previously known as Ministry of Sports will be returning as an "American-style sports bar" under new management early in the new year.

Owners of the nearby Malbas bar, Tish and Dwayne Quirk, were approached following the closure of Ministry earlier this month, and "decided to give it a go", taking over both the bar and the ground-floor Super Liquor store.

The couple moved to Queenstown from Wanaka last year, turning what was previously the Wakatipu Tavern into a Queenstown location of the Malbas bar franchise.

Mrs Quirk said the bar was being gutted to make way for their vision for a revamped American-style sports bar. It will feature 30 TV screens and one huge projector screen.

She gave a tentative opening date of January 20, but said the doors would open "when everything is completely finished and ready to go".

The downstairs store will be replaced by a Thirsty Liquor store.
