Focus on two music events

With summer beckoning, the owners of Queenstown's Subculture nightclub are looking to focus their energies on a possible "big-air style" winter gig and the 2013 return of the Shotover Sunshine Festival.

Antonia Crowley and Simon Hendl put the bar on the market in early May after eight years in the business, looking to make a change to a family-focused lifestyle.

Along with Ms Crowley's sister and business partner, Michelle, the trio have seen Subculture attract an impressive array of bass-heavy artists and associated fans.

The proud parents of a 14-month-old boy, the couple also organised this January's inaugural Shotover Sunshine Festival, which is set to continue as a two-yearly fixture.

Ms Crowley last week told the Queenstown Times that Mr Hendl's return from touring in Australia meant they could start looking at approaching artists for the festival.

"With Si on the summer Shapeshifter tour we will be talking with the artists about coming down for the following year ... and especially with playing New Years at Coro Gold, there will be plenty of artists who we are keen to talk to"

The Coro Gold festival in the Coromandel this year features Shapeshifter, Horace Andy, of Jamaica, Fat Freddy's Drop, Shihad, Kora, Ladi6, the Black Seeds and Trinity Roots.

She said they would love to see many of these artists, who have performed at the Shotover Sunshine Festival, return, but said they would be seeking new talent as well.

Once the summer festival circuit was complete, Ms Crowley said they might also be able to start focusing on holding an open-air winter festival for 2012.

If it gets off the ground, she sees it as being a "music big-air style" event in the mountains, similar to what Burton have put on in the past.

Subculture was listed on an online auction site on May 3 with a "$340,000 or near offer" asking price, and relisted on August 29.

Ms Crowley said they were working closely with a "potential buyer".
