The resignation comes after NZSki lost Coronet Peak ski area manager Hamish McCrostie, who decided on a career change.
Mr Coddington said he began as chief executive six years ago, saying at the time he intended to stay five years to see the company through extensive growth and development.
''It's a very hard company to leave ... [but] I have this burning desire and passion to create a global brand and it's something I've always wanted to create.''
However, he would not give any details about his new career, saying only he would remain based in Queenstown and work with others to create the new global brand.
He would stay on with NZSki until May 24 - two weeks before the ski season started. During his six-year tenure, Mr Coddington has ''successfully delivered many developments including a new base building, new lifts and new snowmaking infrastructure'' and seen the creation of NZSki-U and MyPass technology.
''As a result, we've seen a greatly improved guest experience on our three mountains in Queenstown and Canterbury, huge growth in Australian business, strong future plans for all mountains and especially the future of the Remarkables, increased efficiencies ...and a stronger connection with our communities.''
