Calling all photographers - the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival wants you.

Chief festival photographer Jackie Gay said this year the festival would launch a "shot of the day" competition to find out what captures the hearts and minds of festival-goers - and to give some exposure to budding photographers.

From the minute the festival begins on June 24 until the last one standing at the Quiksilver After Burner on July 3, anyone with a camera was invited to turn their lens on what best summarised their experiences.

Ms Gay, along with other members of the Winter Festival team, would select the best 10 shots of the day every day during the festival, which would be uploaded to the Winter Festival website. A selection would also appear in every edition of the Queenstown Times throughout the festival.

At the final programmed event, all the winning images would be exhibited and the overall shot of the festival would be announced. The winner would receive a prize including a Quiksilver or Roxy snowboard jacket.

The winning photographer's image would also be aired on national television, distributed internationally and used as the festival "hero shot" for the 2012 event.

The competition, open to anyone with a camera, presented an opportunity for budding photographers to get their careers off the ground, meet like-minded people and be part of the event.

"Everyone sees things differently and I'm looking forward to seeing what people will capture of the 50 events and more than 45,000 people estimated to attend festival over its 10-day duration," she said.

Photographers could submit a maximum of five images per day. Entries could be uploaded by visiting www.winterfestival.co.nz and clicking on the "image gallery" tab.

The deadline for entries was 2.30pm each day.

This year's festival begins on June 24, with the traditional opening party and fireworks, featuring Kiwi rocker Jordan Luck, with local and national artists, and the resort's biggest fireworks display - washed down with lashings of mulled wine.
