Bar reopens after chimney fire

It is business as usual for Queenstown's Monty's Bar and Restaurant, which was evacuated on Sunday evening after a chimney fire broke out about 5pm.

Witnesses saw smoke coming out of the bar's fireplace and from the upstairs section of the building. Firefighters had extinguished the fire by 6pm.

Owner Barry Ellis said the downstairs was unaffected, and the only damage was in the flat upstairs.

"There's just a bit of smoke damage, but it's all right," he said. "It's nowhere near as bad as it looked on the day."

Staff did not yet know what caused the fire. An inspection had been carried out and Mr Ellis expected to receive a report in the next few days.

The bar reopened on Monday.
