Assault charges against sportsman dismissed

The sportsman charged in relation to an alleged incident in Queenstown earlier this year had all charges against him dismissed by Judge Raoul Neave in the Queenstown District Court yesterday.

All details identifying the defendant were covered by an interim suppression order.

He was facing one charge each of assault, assaulting Constable Terry Wood, resisting Const Wood and escaping the custody of Const Wood, all on June 29, all of which he denied.

The incident stemmed from an alleged assault inside a Queenstown bar, which escalated once outside the premises.

Following yesterday's defended hearing, Judge Neave found there was insufficient evidence to prove any of the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
