People are being warned not to swim in part of holiday hotspot Lake Hāwea after high levels of bacteria were detected in the water.

In a Facebook post today, the Otago Regional Council said a red alert has been issued after water quality samples taken near the Lake Hāwea Holiday Park showed high levels of bacteria in the lake.

A red alert has also been issued for Otokia Creek near Brighton Beach in Dunedin after testing revealed high bacteria levels.

"People are advised not to swim or use the water for other recreation until further notice.

"Warning signs are in place."

The sites would be tested again and results were expected in a few days.
