14 taken to hospital after four car crash

A coach-load of 13 tourists and a tour guide were taken to hospital after a collision between four vehicles near Jacks Point in Queenstown yesterday evening.

Police officer at the scene Sergeant Brian Cameron said it appeared the vehicles were travelling north at speeds of between 40kmh and 70kmh, with a campervan in the lead, followed by two cars and the bus.

When the campervan tried to turn off into a rest stop, the following cars braked sharply and the privately owned bus crashed into the back of a silver Toyota Corolla about 6pm, he said.

Passengers from the bus, along with the Australian occupants of the silver car, some with minor injuries, were taken to the Lakes District Hospital for a check-up.

Sgt Cameron said it was too early to say if any charges would be laid.
