The Waihemo area does not want be part of the Waitaki district branding already implemented in other areas.
The Waitaki Development Board in 2006 had a consultant produce "refreshed" signage for the district based around Oamaru, the Waitaki Valley and coastal Otago.
Oamaru and Waitaki Valley townships already have their new signs, but the Waihemo Community Board is digging its toes in over the change.
The new signs replace township signs featuring images of their attractions - gliding at Omarama, for example, and the Benmore dam at Otematata.
he board has told the council the community strongly supports retaining the present Waihemo signs.
The signs would go up at Palmerston, Shag Point, Moeraki and Hampden. Another would be erected at the southern boundary of the district.
"We have constantly sought feedback on the district signage since this issue arose and the community's wish has been constant in wanting to retain our signage," community board chairman Rod Philip said.
"Not only did the signs contribute greatly to each community's identity, they were also very effective in portraying the attractions those townships had."
However, pleas for the retention of existing signs could fall on deaf ears.
On Tuesday the council will consider the issue, but it has a recommendation from chief executive Michael Ross that the new signs should be erected.
The existing signs could be offered for relocation within the towns.
Mr Ross said the development board was asked to implement the new signage as part of the district tourism strategy.
"Progress to this stage had been very positive and also very timely - perhaps too quick for some," Mr Ross said.
The branding had been outlined to the community board and, in March last year, it understood there would be further discussion and consultation.
Mr Ross acknowledged this had not taken place.
"At this late stage, however, it is difficult to see what other actions can be taken," he said.
