The Waitaki Boys’ High School Anzac Day concert turns 10 this year, 110 years since the start of the Gallipoli campaign of World War 1.

And the idea of the school first staging an Anzac concert was born out of the centenary of Anzac Day.

Old Boy Allan Portis noticed in 2015 nothing had been organised in the Hall of Memories so he formed a committee.

"We had to do something so we got a couple of local performers and set it up and off we went."

This year’s Anzac Day concert next Friday will feature performers from Auckland, Dunedin, Christchurch and Oamaru.

Mr Portis described the programme as a "semi entertainment and semi memorial" service.

"Nothing too heavy but we manage to work in some appropriate narrative. It’s a nice balance."

Due to the Hall of Memories being under renovation the concert will be held in the school auditorium.

Rector Darryl Paterson said it had become an "integral part" of the school calendar and he was very thankful to Mr Portis.

"It’s Allan’s brainchild. Without his backing, this wouldn’t go ahead."
