Unscheduled stop for bus

A bus crossed on to the wrong side of State Highway 1 in Oamaru yesterday morning, went across a traffic island and then on to a footpath, removing a street light, post box, rubbish bin and street sign, police say.

About 4am, residents discovered the Johnston's Coachlines bus parked on the wrong side of Wansbeck St, Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said.

However, police were not notified until later in the morning when contractors noticed the bus still parked on the wrong side of the road and blocking a driveway.

Police understood the driver was picked up by another bus and taken to Christchurch.

The bus, travelling north, failed to take the corner from Wansbeck St to Severn St, went across the southbound lane hit the kerb in Wansbeck St, and came to rest just short of the Mersey St intersection, Sgt Woodbridge said.

The driver, in his 60s, was returning to Christchurch after taking passengers to Dunedin.

He was the sole occupant.

Police had spoken to Johnston's Coachlines management and would also speak to the driver.

Johnston's Coachlines managing director Philip Manning said it would be inappropriate for him to comment until the driver had been interviewed by police.
