A truck driver was lucky to escape serious injury when this cattle truck overturned on State Highway 83 near MacAuley Rd at Awamoko yesterday morning.
The Makikihi Transport single-unit truck had four cattle on board; one was killed and the other three turned out into an adjacent paddock.
The driver had a knock to the head and was taken to Oamaru Hospital to be checked before being released.
The truck was travelling east on SH83 when it veered off the road shortly after 11am. The driver overcorrected and the truck spun 180deg and then overturned, crushing the cab.
The cattle container on the back was thrown into a paddock beside the road.
The road was closed while police, fire crews from Oamaru and Duntroon and an ambulance were at the crash. Traffic was diverted along Wilson and Aitcheson Rds.
The Commercial Vehicle Investigations Unit is investigating.
