In a Waitaki District Council statement, Naylor Love construction manager Paul Stevenson said the company was excited to be involved as the main contractor.
"The gallery is such an important part of Oamaru, and it’s great to be part of a project that will ensure it continues to be around for future generations," he said.
Work at the site is expected to begin later this month.
The extension will include a lift to improve public access, a new exhibition space, an art collection storeroom and an education room.
Friends of Forrester Gallery chairwoman Heather Machin offered “a huge thank-you’’ to all Forrester supporters over several decades of fundraising and advocacy for the gallery.
"Together, your efforts have allowed the gallery extension project to reach this significant milestone.’’
However, more money was needed.
"The fundraising focus now shifts from construction costs to the fit-out of the new spaces."
Waitaki District Council arts, culture and libraries manager Chloe Searle said the project was advancing largely due to external funds.
Those included $6.5 million from the Ministry for Culture and Heritage’s Regional Culture and Heritage Fund in 2023.
Other contributors were the Lottery Environment and Heritage Fund ($400,000), the John Westwood Christie Trust, the Alexander McMillan Trust, the Stout Trust, a bequest from Ivan Hunter Main and $80,000 raised by the Friends.
The project is expected to be completed next February with an opening in April. — APL
