A town crier may be sought for Palmerston.
The principal duties would be to welcome passengers from the twice-weekly Seasider excursion train which runs from Dunedin to Palmerston in the summer.
The possibility of employing a town crier had been discussed by local promotion group Palmerston Gateway to Gold.
Group member Kathy Dennison, who is also a Waitaki district councillor for the Waihemo ward, said an approach would be made to Palmerston business people to see if they would support a town crier.
As well as welcoming visitors from the Seasider, the town crier could direct people to the businesses and tourist attractions that visitors wanted to see in the 45 minutes the train was in Palmerston, Mrs Dennison said.
