Members of the Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade prepare to lift an injured motorcycle rider into a waiting ambulance on Beach Rd, just south of Oamaru, yesterday.
A St John spokesman said a male, thought to be 55 years old, was treated for a fractured leg at 11.42 am, and the fire brigade had to be called to help paramedics lift the man.
Senior Constable Stuart Dowling said it appeared the man had been travelling north on Beach Rd, but the bike drifted off the road on to shingle as he tried to take a corner.
No other vehicles were involved, he said.
''Motorbikes and shingle don't mix.''
