Mr Shaw, who died at Northanjer Rest Home on Wednesday, was born on August 1, 1904, at Orepuki, near Invercargill, and educated mostly in Gore.
He worked as an upholsterer, opening his own shop at Orepuki.
In 1951, he moved to Riverton where he met his future wife, Hannah, a nurse, who had recently arrived from Belfast.
Mr Shaw worked at the Riverton Hospital as a gardener and then at the Riverton race-course as caretaker.
A funeral service for Mr Shaw will be held in Oamaru today.
