Youthtown, Sport Waitaki and each of the schools involved have contributed money to fund the sports activator role, which will be shared by Youthtown Oamaru branch manager Mike Mullins and co ordinator Gina Healey.
They will deliver sports programmes to 11 primary schools - more than 1400 pupils - from Hampden to Omarama.
Miss Healey said every class and every pupil would get four sessions with the activator each term.
Each school would decide what sports were offered to pupils, from basketball, rugby, netball and touch, to athletics, swimming and gymnastics.
''It gives everyone a broad taste of different sports. It's not just your traditional sports.''
Through Youthtown, Mr Mullins and Miss Healey have already been offering sports programmes at Oamaru Intermediate School and Pembroke School.
Both have extensive backgrounds in a number of sports. Mr Mullins is a former Ireland international rugby player and has also competed at national level in track and field.
Miss Healey has a bachelor of physical education degree from the University of Otago, and before taking up the Youthtown role about 18 months ago worked for four years at summer camps in the United States and was a guide on the Routeburn Track.
They are both excited about the opportunity.
''Being outside and working with kids - that's what I get a buzz from,'' Miss Healey said.
They will visit their first school as sports activators on October 12.
The role includes offering connections with local sports clubs, as well as training teachers so they can deliver sports programmes independently.
''The idea is, teachers will be left with some skills and feel more confident to take sport after we've left,'' Mr Mullins said.
