The blaze lasted almost six hours and burnt "approximately 3ha" of land but no buildings or assets were damaged, Fire and Emergency New Zealand wildfire specialist Steve Ochsner said.
Two helicopters and eight fire trucks attended from Waimate, Waihaorunga, Waitaki, Timaru and Kurow fire brigades.
A farmer had lit several fires that "got away on him" due to the low humidity and strong winds, Mr Ochsner said.
While no permit was required, it was up to the individual to ensure the fire did not escape.
The wind quickly turned into a southerly which cooled the air and helped control the fire, he said.
The south branch of the Waihao River ran through the property, making it easier for the helicopters to fill up.
"We were able to utilise the farm’s water supplies and the local river to access water which was really good."
Mr Ochsner encouraged people to be cautious with burnoffs at this time of the year.
"If they check on our website, checkitsalright.nz, it’s [got] some very good advice on what they need to do to protect themselves and their property."
