Police have warned they will continue to target methamphetamine trade in the South, after the drug surfaced in two towns in the region.
Equipment used to sell drugs was found at a Clyde home yesterday in a search sparked by imported methamphetamine worth up to $14,000 being intercepted by Customs, police said.
Police searched the house yesterday morning. More than 40 cannabis plants were found as well as a lot of equipment, including bags, used to sell methamphetamine, Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis said.
The search warrant was issued after imported methamphetamine, a total of about 14g in three lots, was intercepted by Customs at the Auckland Mail Centre, he said.
Each gram of methamphetamine would sell for between $800 and $1000.
The warrant comes as Senior Constable Craig Bennett, of Kurow, confirmed methamphetamine had also surfaced in Kurow in the past six weeks.
He told Kurow newsletter Bugle this week crime associated with meth use, such as theft, violence and disorder, was happening in the town.
Det Snr Sgt Inglis was pleased the drugs and equipment from Clyde had been ''removed from circulation''.
''Too often we see its devastating effects, not just on users, but on families and the wider community.''
Two people were arrested as a result of the search and Det Snr Sgt Inglis said nobody else was being sought in connection with the incident.
Thanks to the co-operation between police and Customs, more methamphetamine has been stopped from circulating in the community, he said.
''We have to remain vigilant as this is an ongoing situation throughout our district.
''Obviously, there will always be people who want to make money by dealing in drugs rather than going to work.
''We'll continue to focus on anyone who may be involved in the trade or manufacture of cannabis, methamphetamine or any other controlled drugs.''
He asked anyone with information about methamphetamine or other controlled drugs to contact their local police station or report information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555-111.
A 22-year-old Clyde-Alexandra man was charged with the importation and selling of methamphetamine, and cultivation of cannabis. He will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.
A 28-year-old Clyde-Alexandra woman was charged with cultivating cannabis and appeared in the Alexandra District Court yesterday. She was given a registrar's adjournment to appear in that court on November 10.
