Police are seeking witnesses to a crash on Sunday afternoon, in which a car being driven by an elderly driver hit a female pedestrian crossing Thames Highway in Oamaru.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said the southbound 4WD vehicle struck a 37-year-old woman walking across the intersection of Thames Hwy and Ouse St, near Waitaki Girls High School, at 2.40pm.

The woman was hit in the southbound lane of Thames Hwy. The vehicle struck her right leg and she fell to the ground, but escaped serious injury. She received bruises, grazes and a cut to the back of her head.

Traffic signals were working at the time of the crash.

Police were investigating whether the 86-year-old Oamaru man had failed to stop for a red light. Police had spoken to several witnesses, but Sgt Woodbridge urged anyone else who saw the incident to contact Constable Ruth Perham, of Oamaru police, on (03) 433-1400.

The driver of the vehicle that hit and caused serious injury to Renee Ley (15) as she walked across Thames Highway at the crossing between Rainbow Confectionery and Northside New World in the North End on September 6, has been charged with careless driving causing injury, Sgt Woodbridge confirmed.

She is due to appear in the Oamaru District Court tomorrow.

• A woman whose vehicle crashed into two parked cars in Lynn St, Oamaru, on Friday night has been charged.

A police spokeswoman said the 52-year-old woman was processed for drink-driving. She recorded an excess breath alcohol level of 1041mcg.

She was suspended from driving for 28 days and will appear in the Oamaru District Court charged with drink-driving.
