Pole no longer in the picture

One of Oamaru's most photographed corners in the historic precinct has been made more photogenic with the removal of a wooden power pole. It has been replaced by underground wiring.

On Thursday, Network Waitaki Contracting disconnected wires to the pole at the corner of Itchen and Tees Sts, removing it after underground wiring was put in during road reconstruction.

The pole spoiled the vista of the former AMP building across the lower end of Thames St, at the entrance to the historic precinct. It also obstructed photographs of the corner of the building, which has one of the few AMP marble statues in existence on its parapet.
