Two Kurow sections may again be put up for sale by the Waitaki District Council, after a similar move four years ago caused a major row in the Waitaki Valley township.
The Freyberg Ave sections were given to the council by the original subdividers who developed the 53-section subdivision. However, when the council wanted to sell the sections in 2005, there was argument over whether the land was given to the council in lieu of development contributions and roading costs or as a reserve.
That led to petitions and a public meeting in 2005, attended by 24 people, which called on the council to retain the sections.
Eventually, the Ombudsman's office was involved and it directed a further public meeting should be held to consult the community over the future of the 2000sq m of land.
Council property manager Dougall McIntyre said a public meeting was held in December to discuss lifting the reserve designation. No-one turned up.
Yesterday, the council's strategy committee recommended the reserves designation be lifted so the sections could be sold.
