Passenger flights could return to Oamaru Airport for the first time in three years, but only if public demand is high enough.
Airline operator Mainland Air will begin commercial flights from Dunedin to Christchurch twice a week from October 19, and might stop at Oamaru as part of that service.
Mainline Air operations manager Phil Keane said if enough people wanted to fly from Oamaru, planes would pick them up "just like a bus".
Commercial flights from Oamaru stopped in 2009, after Eagle Air pulled its service, but Mr Keane said Mainline Air could start taking passengers from Oamaru from October 19.
He said people could book online, and if at least seven seats were filled, planes would stop at the town's airport.
If demand was high enough, a dedicated Oamaru-to-Christchurch flight would be considered, he said.
"It may even well be that we might go from Oamaru, depending on what the demand is.
"We will go where the demand is. If they want us to fly once a week, we will fly once a week, if the demand is for seven days a week, we will do seven days, as long as it pays."
A one-way ticket between Oamaru and Christchurch will cost $200.
