Oamaru girl facing assault charge after brawl

A 15-year-old Waitaki Girls' High School pupil faces an assault charge as a result of her alleged involvement in a brawl in Oamaru.

Police attended the incident, which took place outside Couplands Bakery on Thames St, at 12pm yesterday.

Police believe up to six pupils and several adults were involved.

Waitaki Girls' High School principal Tracy Walker said the school had spoken to police about the incident and was conducting its own investigation.

Mrs Walker said one pupil had been suspended, while another two had been referred to Youth Aid.

It was possible further action would be taken against those involved, she said.

"Obviously this kind of incident does not happen very often . . . it was a shock and we are dealing with it.''

The pupil arrested would appear in the Oamaru Youth Court on March 21.
