Multiple charges for driver

A 30-year-old man is facing several charges, including dangerous driving, after police deployed spikes to halt a vehicle being driven at speed in Dunback.

A police spokeswoman said the man had appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday charged with failing to stop when signalled to do so, driving in a dangerous manner, and driving while disqualified.

A separate warrant to arrest the same man had earlier been issued on another matter, the spokeswoman said.

On Friday night, police deployed spikes to stop a fleeing driver’s vehicle in Dunback-Morrison’s Rd, but the driver then ran off.

Police had earlier tried to stop the vehicle in Macraes Rd in Dunback about 6.20pm but the driver failed to stop.

Police later found the man nearby.

He was taken into custody about 8pm on Friday, a police spokeswoman said.

It is understood Friday’s driving incident began after a member of the public contacted police about the way a vehicle was being driven in the Ranfurly area, about 60km via State Highway 85 from where the vehicle was later stopped.

Police were asked for further details about the start of the incident near Ranfurly.

However, a spokeswoman said no further details could be given because the matter was before the courts.
