The Waitaki District Council will make a formal request to the New Zealand Transport Agency ''demanding urgent action'' on State Highway 1 at Moeraki after the latest in a series of recent deaths on the highway.

A 39-year-old Chinese woman, identified by police as Miss Li, died in a three-car crash last week at the Moeraki Boulders turn-off on November 22.

She was the fifth person to die as the result of a crash on SH1 near Moeraki in the past two years.

Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher said yesterday while in the past there had been ''semi-formal discussions around options'' between the council and the transport agency, this would be the first formal request for action from the NZTA.

The agency, he said, did not hear ''about all the near misses'' reported by regular road users.

''We just need to take this up a couple of notches because it is, seriously, a real problem that is only growing,'' Mr Kircher said.

Last week's crash coincided with a regular meeting between the Waitaki council and the transport agency, chief executive Michael Ross said.

He attended the meeting last Wednesday, the day after the crash, with council roading manager Michael Voss and assets manager Neil Jorgensen.

The request would stress ''the importance of this issue for our whole community''.

''I believe we made good progress on the matter and I have been in touch with [the NZTA] further by phone today,'' Mr Ross said yesterday.

The agency has declined to comment on the safety of SH1 at Moeraki since last week's crash.

The Otago Daily Times yesterday asked again whether interim safety measures at Moeraki were possible in advance of a Safe Roads Alliance investigation of SH1 from Oamaru to Dunedin next year.

A spokeswoman acknowledged receiving the question, but no reply was received yesterday.
