Moa to perform at library

Anika Moa is bringing her songs for children to Otago this week as part of her "Songs for Bubba: The In Between Naps'' national tour.

The musician's only Otago performance is at the Oamaru Public Library on Thursday.

Moa said time constraints in the school holidays meant she could only do one show in the region during the April trip and Oamaru was the result of a social media request from the Waitaki District Libraries.

She said she really "loved" Oamaru for its Victorian Precinct, the venues she previously performed in and the surrounding areas.

"I'm from Christchurch, so all of that coastline is like playing at home.''

Moa, a mother of three, said the shift into creating children's music was born out of her personal experiences.

"I write about what I know. I'm singing for my children every day.

"This is my first kids' tour I've ever done so I don't know what to expect.''

She said the music she will perform exposes all crowd-goers to elements of the Maori language.

"The music I write teaches them numbers in Maori, colours in Maori and Maori vowels. It teaches them to have an imagination.''

Moa said the Maori language was so lost, so if she could reach out to children and their parents, then that could only be a good thing.

"It's really a win-win.''

She said the packed tour would not allow her much time to look at Oamaru, but she had pencilled in time for one of the local mainstays - "cheese rolls and a coffee on the corner''.

The gold coin entry show starts at 10.30am.
