An 87-year-old man has been charged after his car mounted a footpath in Oamaru in January, killing Waikouaiti man Gerald James Cowley and injuring three other people.
The man will appear in the Oamaru District Court next month on one charge of careless use of a motor vehicle causing death and three of careless use of a motor vehicle causing injury.
Initial inquiries showed that about 11.30am on January 11, on the corner of Eden and Thames Sts, the car was driven on to the footpath, where it hit three pedestrians, before continuing back on to Thames St, where it was struck by two vehicles.
A 70-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries and was transported to Dunedin Hospital and a 13-year-old girl was treated for injuries at Oamaru Hospital.
All three drivers involved in the crash were also taken to Oamaru Hospital for treatment.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said there was an extensive investigation into the crash.
"It was a horrible incident for a lot of people.''
