Man charged after Hakataramea crash

A man has been charged following a fatal crash on the Hakataramea Valley Rd, near Kurow, in May.

Canterbury Police have charged a 40-year-old-man with four counts of excess blood alcohol causing injury and one count of excess blood alcohol causing death.

The man is due to appear in Timaru District Court on September 10.

A seven-seater Toyota Landcruiser carrying Kurow RFC players and supporters veered to the edge of the Hakataramea Valley Rd on a moderate bend near Cattle Creek, overcorrected, and then rolled several times into a paddock on May 10.

The Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter made two trips to take one of the critically injured victims and a seriously injured one to Dunedin Hospital, while Westpac Rescue Helicopter from Christchurch took one person in a critical condition and another in a serious condition to Christchurch.

The other two occupants were both seriously injured and taken by ambulance to Timaru Hospital

Jarrad Ethan Blackler (23), Danseys Pass, died from his injuries in Dunedin Hospital.
