Lucky to escape injury in crash

Police say a driver involved in a crash yesterday afternoon is lucky to have walked away uninjured.

The crash occurred when a car being driven along Torridge St crossed into the path of a car travelling north along Thames St about 3pm, police said.

Senior Constable Bruce Dow said the driver of the Torridge St vehicle claimed not to have seen the other car.

The driver of the car in Thames St had nowhere he could go, given he was surrounded by other vehicles, so his car took the full impact.

"The seat belt saved him. Had he not been wearing a seat belt he would have been flung into the steering column and gotten a chest injury. He's had a classic T-bone [crash].''

No-one was injured in the crash. Snr Const Dow said it was too early to say whether charges would be laid.
