Long Lunch remains al fresco

It was a 50:50 call, but Saturday’s Laneway Long Lunch remained as it was meant to be — an al fresco dining experience.

About 40 people dined at a long table laid out on Harbour St with the Victorian precinct as a backdrop at the second edition of the fundraiser, this year raising money for the North Otago Cancer Society.

Chef Bevan Smith and his team from Riverstone Kitchen prepared 17 dishes  from fresh ingredients donated by producers from  around  the district.

Mr Smith said consideration was given to holding the three-hour lunch inside the Loan and Merc building,  given the threat of rain.

"We half set up inside and at 10am we made the decision to head out here, because the weather was meant to improve.

"It’s two years in a row it’s come out our way, so you can’t be unhappy with that."

He said it was a "great occasion" for a good cause.

Jude Robertson had a seat at the table and said the food and atmosphere were "absolutely superb".

The idea for the long lunch came from  Mr Smith and Oamaru restaurateur Sally-Ann Donnelly.
