More than 270 Lions members and their partners attended a convention in Oamaru at the weekend, showing the organisation is holding its own in membership in District 202J, which covers the area from Rakaia to Milton, including Dunedin.
They were at the Oamaru Opera House on Friday night for the official opening of the district convention, after which about 160 delegates attended the business session on Saturday, followed by a dinner that night and then a church service yesterday.
While some community service organisations were struggling to maintain membership numbers and attract younger people, the convention turnout showed the continuing strength of Lions.
District governor Les Box said the 40 clubs in the district had about 1300 members.
"We are holding our own in terms of membership," Mr Box said.
However, Lions would like to attract more young people.
"They bring new ideas, enthusiasm and create a good atmosphere," he said.
Like other organisations, Lions was concerned about retaining members and attracting younger members, but Mr Box felt Lions had a good standing in the community and was well recognised, which helped.
"We all have an ongoing membership plan," he said.
Expanding membership was one of the issues discussed during Saturday afternoon's business session.
The next District 202J convention will held be in Mayfield next year.
